Built by the Community, for the Community
Fighting the Good Fight Initiative was born from lived experience — not theory. We exist because our community needed an organization that truly understood the road back.
"The people closest to the pain are closest to the solution."
How We Started
From Conviction to Calling
FTGF was founded by Darryl Woods Sr., a man who served time on a life sentence and emerged with a mission: to make sure others didn't have to walk the same road alone. What began as one man's commitment to his community has grown into a structured, multi-program nonprofit serving youth, families, and returning citizens across the region.
We were built on the belief that the people closest to the pain are closest to the solution. Every program, every partnership, every dollar raised is rooted in that conviction. We don't theorize about what communities need — we live it.
Today, FTGF operates six core programs, partners with courts, schools, and juvenile justice agencies, and has touched more than a thousand lives. But we measure success one person at a time.
Our Mission
Why We Exist
To restore hope, rebuild lives, and transform communities by providing credible, compassionate, and comprehensive support to justice-involved youth, returning citizens, and at-risk families.
Our Vision
A World Where Redemption Is Possible
We envision communities where returning citizens are welcomed back as contributors, where at-risk youth are redirected toward purpose, and where families are strengthened — not torn apart — by the systems meant to serve them.
How We Work
The Credible Messenger Model
At the heart of everything we do is the Credible Messenger model: pairing people who have lived through incarceration, violence, and systemic barriers with those who are currently facing the same challenges. This isn't just a program strategy — it's a philosophy.
When a young person sees someone who looks like them, who has been where they've been, and who found another way — that changes something. It makes transformation feel possible, not theoretical. That's the power of lived experience.
We pair this relational approach with structured programming, community partnerships, and systemic advocacy — because lasting change requires both the personal and the structural.
What We Stand For
Our Core Values
These aren't words on a wall. They are the principles that guide every decision, every program, and every relationship we build.
Hope
We believe no situation is beyond redemption. Hope is not naive — it is the engine of every transformation we have ever witnessed.
Dignity
Every person we serve is treated with full dignity — not as a case number, a statistic, or a problem to be managed.
Accountability
We hold ourselves and those we serve to high standards — because accountability is not punishment, it is respect.
Resilience
The communities we serve have survived extraordinary hardship. We honor that resilience and build on it.
Service
We are here to serve — not to be served. Every decision we make is filtered through that commitment.
Opportunity
We work to create and expand access to opportunity for those who have been systematically excluded from it.

Who We Work With
Trusted by Courts, Schools & Communities
FTGF collaborates with juvenile justice agencies, family courts, public schools, faith communities, and fellow nonprofits to coordinate services and close the gaps that people fall through. Our credibility is built on relationships — and those relationships are built on results.
